Honorable Mentions

You guys all know the usual rules by now… three HMs. Well, it’s a credit to these four that I really couldn’t weed one out. They were each so different from each other and I genuinely enjoyed them all.

Wakefield Mahon | @WakefieldMahon

Yikes, man! Karma means serious business in this tale, and I will definitely steer clear of any strapping young carnies, lol. [read more]

Bullish | @bullishink

Pure backwoods poetry. :D I loved this ode to the biggest chance of all: love. [read more]

Lisa McCourt Hollar | @jezri1

Lisa, I’m so used to horror from you, so this was a real treat. I love your jaded character finding love in the sparkling blue eyes of the valet!  [read more]

@LupusAnthropos

Lupus, you opened with a great hook with the intelligent bacteria, and I loved your ending here.  [read more]

Week 32 Judge’s Pet

Siobhan Muir | @SiobhanMuir

Siobhan, I’m fast becoming a fan of Cassie and Jack as their story evolves in your flash tales, and I really look forward to reading the final work. You snagged the JP prize this week for really giving me that star-crossed feel as Cassie tries to decide how to handle this old flame returning (and rekindling) in her life.

The screams of the delighted patrons washed over Cassie as she strode through the visiting carnival. A loop-de-loop roller coaster with tiers of seats whooshed past, more shouts of mock terror filling the cotton candy air. She’d worn a v-necked t-shirt and capris to fit in with the crowd, but she’d never felt so naked in her life.

Cassie used her cell to hide touching her earpiece. “Pierce, got anything yet?”

Jack wandered around here, somewhere, too. When he’d dressed for the op in a turquoise t-shirt and faded jeans, she thought she’d swallow her tongue. Lust and pure feminine appreciation roared through her as he’d shoved a .38 into his left boot.

“Nothing yet. Checking carousel now.”

Damn, even his voice made her body tingle. You have to let go of him, Tucker. She knew that intellectually, but her heart refused to believe. Jack had walked away nearly a decade before, and he only used her to get to Sebastian Leech now, despite his sweet words about marrying her.

“Don’t fall for it, Tucker,” she murmured. “It’ll never be the right time.”

“Target sighted.” Jack’s voice snapped her into action. “At the carousel.”

Cassie bolted into the crowd.

.

Week 32 Champ

Rebekah Postupak | @postupak

Rebekah. I enjoyed your tale and it kept me going waiting to see who this third child would become. How awesome that he saves the day! And he’s known all along the greatness he was meant for! Excellent tale and btw, I am a HUGE fan of superheroes. :D

“The Third”

The first boy was born with blond curls and wise, blue eyes.

The second boy was born with thick hair and long, slender fingers.

But the third boy emerged bald and grinning.

The first boy grew up to become a chemist, whose brilliant formulas brought about miracles. The second boy grew up to become a surgeon, whose gifted hands never failed to heal.

Nobody was sure the third boy would even make it to adulthood.

“He’s a little—off,” said his parents.

His teachers agreed. “He’s special.”

His friends disagreed. “Star-crossed.”

“It’s just not my time yet,” grinned the boy.

It’s true the boy seemed to carry more than his share of trouble. By sixteen, he’d witnessed three burglaries, endured twelve car wrecks, and escaped from four burning buildings.

When at eighteen he wanted to ride the new coaster, everyone balked, knowing what might happen. He insisted confidently, vehemently.

“You have to let go of me,” he said, laughing. “It’s my time.”

The subsequent disaster as one car broke free and hurtled groundward horrified but surprised no one.

His launching into the air and carrying the car to safety, however, surprised them all.

All except the smiling boy.

.

Congratulations, Siobhan and Rebekah. Claim your badges and display them with pride! (If you need any alterations for color/background, just let me know, or check the #MenageMonday page for a white background version).

Pass on the great news. Google Plus, Twitter, FB, smoke signals. I’m not picky. Check out all of this week’s offerings here, and be sure to come back next #MenageMonday!

Week 31 Judge’s Pet

Phoenix Lavan|@PhoenixLavan

Excellent imagery surrounding a hearbreaking tale of regret and loss. The emotional and physical storms colliding wins my heart for Judge’s Pet.

I’m swimming against a tidal wave of thoughts, emotions. When I told her how I felt, I didn’t expect a positive response. My thought processes need more time to assess the situation. I thought the fire between us was just wishful thinking on my part.

“Vann? Hello?” She waves her hand in front of my face, drawing me back to her.

“I’m sorry, I was so focused on the response being negative that I…”

“Would you rather I respond negatively?” She interjects, wearing that smile I fell in love with.

But, something is wrong. I can see the fire at her core, darkness surrounding her. A single tear falls. The fire is blown out of her and scattered into the darkness.

I awake screaming her name, drowned out by a crash of thunder and rain pounding against my window. “Shit…” I brush back my sweat-soaked hair.

I was too paralyzed by fear to tell her how I felt. Now it’s too late. The monochrome of night is a perfect fit for my regret. I grab the announcement to the funeral from my nightstand as lightning illuminates my dreary state of mind.

.

Week 31 Champ

Aurora Lee|@AuroraLee

It takes a strong writer to pull off 2nd person, and you’ve done it well. I can feel the emotional paralysis of facing the hypothetical tragedies we philosophize about in our youth made very real and immediate.

As you stare into the fire, you wish the flickering flames would burn away the storm of emotions raging through your mind like wildfire. Through it all, one thought floats above the others: “I need more time.” There is never enough time, but most people don’t realize that until someone tells them that it’s almost gone.

“A couple of months…”

“Say your goodbyes…”

It’s one of those questions you asked your friends – back when you were young and stupid and bored: “What would you do if you only had a day to live?”

Now your answer is: “I don’t know…”

.

Congratulations, Phoenix and Aurora. Claim your badges and display them with pride! (If you need any alterations for color/background, just let me know, or check the #MenageMonday page for a white background version).

#MenageMonday – Winners – Week 30

Sorry for the delay in posting the results. Judge Katherine had a big presentation yesterday and was incommunicado for much of the day. Then tonight, I got home just long enough to be told I needed to ferry the future Mr. Michaels to the pharmacy, stat. Le sigh. I am finally home now, so thanks to everyone who came out this week and to our judge for providing a fun prompt and making the tough calls! Here we go…

On to the Winners!

Katherine Says: First – the caliber of stories were fantastic. I loved reading them! But of course, this is a contest so I had to pick the winners. I went with what “grabbed” me and really made me wonder what a whole book based on this might look like.

Week 30 Judge’s Pet

@LupusAnthropos

Katherine Says: What can I say, I love a good Hoffa hook.

“Why should I care? I got a bridge to build and I already got enough setbacks without THIS.”

“Mr. De Luca, this bridge is now a crime scene. No more work can be done here until we finish our investigation. Is that clear?”

“Yeah, yeah, but can’t we keep working on the other part, over there?”

“Mr. De Luca, I assure you that the investigators will do all they can to get you back to work as soon as possible. Most will be out of your way in a couple of hours, but some will still need to do more processing of the actual area where the body was found.”

“Can’t you give me some idea? I mean, I got a bunch of people waiting to get back on the job.”

“Well, then, perhaps YOU can explain. How DID the body of Jimmy Hoffa turn up in this NEW bridge 37 years after his disappearance?”

.

Week 30 Champ

Dee | @dee_768

Katherine Says: If she ever writes this book, I would want first crack at publishing it.

The Journey

Jessa huddled in the shadow of the concrete monolith, muttering a prayer to the None, tears burning her eyes.

“Don’t let him find me. Please.”

Jazzy’s cries ended mid-shriek and the silence was broken only by the thwack of rebar and grunts of the Ravager. Jessa’s body screamed “run,” but silent movement in the jungle of ruins was impossible. All she could do was hide and pray.

Hours later, the Bright sank below the jagged horizon and Jessa’s conscious returned. Dusk and dawn were the only time she and Jazzy dared…

Her mouth distorted in a silent wail as the memory crashed back. But through the anguish she knew she had to keep going. It was at least another thirtnight back to the colony, longer if she didn’t take advantage of every mo of halflight.

“Why should I care?” she whispered to the None. “I’m still here. None can explain the why of it.”

She closed her eyes and sent forth her senses, ears open for any faint ding or crunch, hands and feet in the rubble seeking infinitesimal vibration. The stillness of the planet was complete.

With no hint of any presence, she rose and shouldered her pack.

.

Congratulations, Lupus and Dee. Claim your badges and display them with pride! (If you need any alterations for color/background, just let me know, or check the #MenageMonday page for a white background version).
